1. Back in the 1600's, treason was a crime taken very seriously. The kings were often cruel people and the punishments would include things such as hanging and other forms of death. Treason was no joke back then.

2. In the 1600's during a shipwreck, everybody else on the ship was supposed to sink with the king since the king is thought of as the most important person. Antonio jumped shipped which would result in a punishment.

3. There were humiliating punishments for things such as murder and treason in the 1600s. People would be whipped, branded, or have their ears cut off in front of a group of people.

4. The royal lineage in the 1600s always was done a certain way. The eldest son would always inherit the royalty, in this case the dukedom, and then his eldest son afterwards and so on. If something were to happen to the eldest son and his son, like if they were to die, then the second oldest son would inherit the dukedom.

5. There were a number of very curel punishments for murder in the 1600s. Antonio plots to kill a couple of people in the Tempest such as Alonso, and if he were to execute his plan and be caught he would have to suffer a punishment such as being burned, having all of his limbs stretched, or be simply drowned.

6. Including harsh punishments for murder, and treason, there were also severe consequences for bribery. Antonio bribes Alonso into ousting his brother out of the his dukedom. Antonio would have been punished for this as well as his crimes for murder and treason.

7. Whenever there is a time when the king could possible be in danger, the men around him are supposed to save him no matter what the circumstance is. While the ship is about to crash in "The Tempest" Antonio jumps ship instead of staying to care for the king Alonso. Antonio would also have been punished for this crime along with all of his others

8. When Antonio wants to run Prospero out of his dukedom, he has Alonso use the army of Naples to run him out. In the 1600s the king had complete control of the army and their duties. While the soldiers in these armies had heavy metal armor, their armor was mostly for show and they mainly relied on their weapons which would include swords, maces, and battle axes.

9. The duke would always have a higher form of education than the other civilians of his country. The duke and his family were always taught by the most renowned teachers and were taught the highest level of education they had.

10. Dukes were highly ranked in nobility. The roles of a duke would include being given land to govern for the monarch. These lands were called duchies and controlled completely by the duke.
